PRE-GAME PEP TALKS THAT ACTUALLY WORK

Motivation isn’t about hype—it’s about clarity and connection.

A good pre-game talk:

  • Focuses on process and effort ("Win your battles", "Be fearless")

  • Reaffirms team identity ("We are the hardest-working team out here")

  • Offers 1 or 2 clear action cues ("First pass, first pressure")

What to avoid:

  • Overloading with last-minute tactics

  • Yelling or overwhelming emotional speeches

  • Overemphasizing winning

Consistency is key. Deliver the same message with calm confidence and emotional control.
